The Tippie College of Business will adopt a selective admission process effective for students applying to the college for spring 2013.
The new process will require a 300–500 word personal statement and a one-page résumé. These two documents will figure into the admission decision along with academic performance as determined by a student’s grade-point average (GPA) in prerequisite courses, GPA in all courses taken at The University of Iowa, and cumulative GPA for all college course work.
Applicants will no longer be guaranteed admission to the College based on GPA alone.
These changes will not impact the Direct Admission Process for first-year students.
The changes to the admission process will provide for a more comprehensive review of applicants, and encourage qualified applicants to reflect on their goals and motivation before undertaking professional business study.
In order to be considered for admission, students should meet the following criteria by the end of the semester in which they are applying:
- Complete at least 12 graded UI semester hours (s.h.)
- Complete four prerequisite courses (or their equivalents) with grades of C or higher:
- 22M:017 Calculus and Matrix Algebra for Business
- 22S:008 Statistics for Business
- 6E:001 Principles of Microeconomics
- 6A:001 Introduction to Financial Accounting
- A minimum GPA of 2.75 on all prerequisite, UI, and cumulative course work
Transfer students with 60 semester hours or more who meet the prerequisites and the cumulative and prerequisite GPA requirements are eligible to apply directly to the College. Transfer students who have earned fewer than 60 semester hours or who have not completed the prerequisite courses are held to the admission criteria above.
The application deadlines will be March 1 for fall applicants and Oct. 1 for spring applicants.
