Students at Iowa have been eagerly watching the construction of Catlett Hall, Iowa’s newest residence hall, since it began in spring of 2015. After much anticipation, we’re proud to announce that the first set of students is scheduled to move into this beautiful riverside residence during this year’s fall term.
The new residence hall is named for Elizabeth Catlett, an Iowa graduate in 1940 and the nation’s first African American recipient of the Master of Fine Arts degree. Catlett, despite facing discrimination throughout her life and career, went on to become one of the most influential American sculptors and printmakers of the 20th century.
Catlett Hall is a proud tribute to its namesake’s legacy, offering students a multitude of common study spaces to pursue their own inventive endeavors. The new residence hall’s location on the Iowa River makes for incredible views of the landscape, especially from common lounges on each floor. Floors will be divided
into three “houses”, with each house having its own lounge. These houses provide close communities for students in Catlett, breaking the building’s residents into smaller groups that can live and study together.
With a dining hall overlooking the river, a café, laundry and fitness facilities, and even a full kitchen that student residents can reserve, Catlett Hall isn’t short on amenities. Its central location (just down the street from the Iowa Memorial Union and a 5-minute walk from the center of campus) will also make Catlett Hall a great option for first-year students seeking a convenient, comfortable place to call home. With all the excitement surrounding Catlett’s opening, its 1,049-student capacity will no doubt fill up fast.
