The U.S. Department of Education has changed the date for filing the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA). The FAFSA became available to complete on October 1, 2016. In previous years, the FAFSA was available starting in January. Students who are applying for financial aid for the 2017-2018 school year should complete the FAFSA as soon as possible if they have not done so already. To complete the FAFSA, students and their families will use tax information from 2015.
Priority consideration for need-based scholarships and grants awarded by the University of Iowa Office of Student Financial Aid will be given to students whose 2017-2018 FAFSA record has been received by December 1, 2016.
After a student is admitted to the University of Iowa and has submitted the FAFSA, their financial aid eligibility is determined. Students can submit the FAFSA before they are admitted to Iowa, but they will not be awarded financial aid until after they are admitted. Awarding of financial aid begins in mid-January and continues throughout the year.
