A new scholarship available to first-year University of Iowa students starting this year aims to help students complete their undergraduate degrees in four years or less.
The Summer Hawk Tuition Grant will award Iowa residents a full-tuition scholarship for up to 12 semester hours of summer study. First-year, first-time students entering the university this summer or fall will automatically receive the awards.
Nonresident students will receive the difference between resident and nonresident tuition for up to 12 hours of summer courses. The value of the scholarship is determined by the actual number of hours for which a student enrolls during a single summer.
The scholarship may be used any summer after an academic year in which a student enrolls in at least 24 semester
hours. It must be used within four years of admission to the university.
The new program enhances Iowa’s standing as a top college value. Summer-study scholarships for first-year students Kiplinger’s Personal Finance magazine recently ranked the UI 49th on its list of the top 100 resident-tuition values in higher education—making it the state’s overall best public university value for Iowa residents. The UI ranked 72nd
among U.S. public universities for out-of state tuition.
Fiske Guide to Colleges has named Iowa a “best buy” eight years running. Iowa’s resident tuition is the second lowest in
the Big Ten conference. The focus on value also supports Iowa’s emphasis on student success. The university is developing new ways to identify and assist students concerned about paying for their education. It’s also helping more students graduate in four years, a big factor in keeping college costs down.
