Twenty $5,200 Roy J. Carver Charitable Trust Scholarships will be awarded to selected students who will be juniors at the University of Iowa for the fall 2012 semester. The scholarships are awarded to the applicants who best exemplify the industriousness shown by Roy J. Carver, who pulled himself up by his bootstraps to pursue and achieve the American dream.
Eligible applicants include Iowa community college sophomores who intend to transfer to the University of Iowa as juniors in the fall.
If you have interested students, encourage them to apply as soon as possible. To qualify for consideration, applicants must demonstrate financial need by filing the 2012-2013 Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) by March 1.
Applicants also must complete the online Carver Scholarship Application by April 1.
Additional Eligibility Requirements include:
- Being an Iowa resident, Iowa high school graduate, or resident of the state for at least five consecutive years immediately prior to application
- Being a U.S. citizen
- Having junior status for fall 2012 (must have completed at least 60 semester hours)
- Having a minimum 2.80 cumulative GPA
- Being enrolled full time for fall
- Showing great potential and promise, having had to work hard to make ends meet, and having faced unusual or debilitating circumstances in life
Applicants will be required to submit an essay (limited to 500 words) explaining the barriers they have overcome to pursue their education and provide the email addresses of two professional individuals (other than family members) willing to submit electronic letters of support on their behalf.
